From eBoards to Canvas

By: Julia Garelick

Upon entering the 2019-20 school year, the Half Hollow Hills School District made a big change from the way students access data. Say goodbye to eBoards because for the upcoming year, Hills East has decided to switch to a new Learning Management System called Canvas, accessed by Clever. Clever is a service that makes it easier for schools to use educational technology. This program provides schools with control over what is viewed by the students, and by using it, districts do not have to make individual updates when students switch classes. It offers a single sign-on which allows teachers and students to access multiple applications through a “Clever Portal.” It’s for everyone, and you can build a login at no cost.

Through this portal, we are able to access Canvas, which is engineered to be the simplest and most secure way for school districts around the world to share data. Canvas is a course management system that supports online teaching and learning. Within the student application, you can view your classes, assignments, discussions, files, and test/quiz grades. It also offers live chat rooms where you can communicate with your classmates and teachers outside the classroom along within school.

Canvas provides the tools to support online learning in a variety of ways and you can find the link to it by following these simple steps:

  • Visit the Half Hollow Hills Website (
  • Click “Teaching and Learning” at the top
  • Hover of that tab and click “Educational Technology”
  • Scroll down and click on the Canvas Icon
  • Your username is your 9 digit student ID
  • Your password is your initials followed by mmddyy of your birthdate

As we continue with the implementation of Canvas, it is the school’s hope that this program will be a primary source for success. On Monday, September 9th, the district hosted a parent and guardian training and over 100 parents came. For more information on how to use Canvas, parents can log onto this website: and students can click here: Best of luck to everyone in this new technological endeavor!!
