Mamma Mia by Hills East

By: Julia Garelick

Every winter, with the help of many students and staff, preparations for a blockbuster musical production begin at High School East. Each show that graces the stage of our auditorium is phenomenal and beautifully put together. As it is just around the corner, students are beginning to get excited to attend or participate in the upcoming performance. I interviewed Elle Malinow, an annual participant in the musical, for more information.

This year’s show is Mamma Mia, the story of Donna, an independent hotelier in the Greek Islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in the hopes of meeting her real, biological father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day. In High School East’s version, Donna is played by sophomore Lila Goldstein, and Sophie is played by sophomore Maia Penzer. If you want to find out what ends up happening with Sophie, attend the show on either March 20th or 21st, when 40-50 of Hills East’s most talented performers take the stage and entertain us with their incredible singing, dancing, and acting.

During my interview with Elle, I asked her what her favorite part of being in the musical is, and why she is in it. She responded by saying, “My favorite part is the dance rehearsals because I love learning new and exciting dances. I’m in the play because I not only love to sing and dance, but it’s also an opportunity to see my friends who I don’t have classes with throughout the school day.” All participants seem to really enjoy partaking in the play, and overall, it sounds like it is going to be one of the best ones yet! Mamma Mia has, for years, been much loved in film and stage adaptations. I am excited to see how HSE brings it to life. Hope to see you at the theater in March!
